This month I spent a week in Scotland, visiting Inverness, the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Harris. I went there to try to find some solace in the landscape and to be distracted by these incredible places that I had wanted to see for a long time.
I took the train to Inverness and the bus to Skye for a couple of nights. Heavy rain on and off but the sun came out for a walk to the remarkable Fairy Glen. I was unsure the ferry would run because of the storms but thankfully it did.
On Harris, the weather was spectacular - the rapid changes from rain and hail to sunshine brought lots of rainbows and at night the wind sounded like music. The landscape is spectacular - I can see why so many people fall in love with this place. The time alone was strange and sometimes difficult but I did feel some joy in nature, something I hadn’t felt for many months, and I also recovered my love of taking photographs, which I had hoped would happen.
Also in March, my short film, Becoming an Island, was screened in Illinois. It was an Official Selection of The Big Muddy Film Festival, now in its 48th year, which is one of the longest running student organized film festivals. The festival focus was on waves of resistance - rooted in community, accessibility, social justice and the environment. Thank you to the selectors.
