June 2017

Towards the end of last month I was thrilled to find out that Sea Level 09 had made the final selection of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. I went along to the Varnishing Day on 5 June, joining the procession to St James, Piccadilly, and later enjoyed the artists' exhibition preview. Very happy with how my work has been hung in Room V, which was under Rebecca Salter RA's supervision (lower right, below). Looking forward to going back later this week for a more leisurely look at the show.

A little while ago I met the Inside the Outside Collective at their exhibition at MMX Gallery in New Cross. It was a wonderful show of landscape photography and a pleasure to meet Rob, Al, Steve and Joe. Last month they very kindly invited me to show work from Unseen Landscapes and Sea Level on their blog and social media - the reaction and support for the work was overwhelming.

I'm continuing to add work to the Sea Level series when I'm in Sussex. Here is one of the most recent images.

May 2017

Last month the inaugural exhibition at the Thought Foundation, near Gateshead, opened and my video, Riverbed Stories, was one of the exhibits. The Thoughtful Planet exhibition, which continues to mid-June, features mixed media work on an environmental theme.

My photographs and text about Fairways, my father's house, was published at the end of March in fLIP magazine. Some of the work from this series will also be published in another magazine later this spring.

In April work from both Unseen Landscapes and Sea Level was published by Landscape Stories on their blog as part of their Altered Landscape edition.

Over the past month I've had time to visit some really good exhibitions in London - Anthony Cairns at Roman Road, the Deutsche Börse exhibition at the Photographers Gallery featuring stunning work by Sophie Calle, the Inside the Outside exhibition at MMX Gallery and Richard Mosse at the Curve, Barbican. Looking forward to seeing Photo London later this month and some satellite exhibitions, plus I've booked up for Arles in July, which is very exciting.

In the meantime, I'm continuing to shoot more images for Sea Level, Fairways and Unseen Landscapes.

I was happy to find out this week that one of my Sea Level photographs has been shortlisted for exhibition this summer - finger's crossed that it makes it through!

I am still spending quite a bit of time in Sussex at my father's house and have been collecting more photographs for the Fairways series while I'm there. Following the surprise 3rd place win in the International Photographer of the Year award I was asked to write about this work for a photography publication which should be coming out at the end of this month. It was difficult to write about this series for many reasons but finally I felt the text accurately reflected the work and its process.

February 2017 (2)

A quick additional post for February as I found out earlier this week by surprise that I had won 3rd prize in the Architecture Interior category of the International Photographer of the Year Awards. I'd submitted photographs from Fairways, a series I've been taking at my father's house in Sussex. I know my Dad would be amused to think pictures of his house had won a prize, but he was always so supportive of me I'm sure he would also have been very happy.

I was also pleased to find out from Visual Aids in New York that my postcard image had been sold at the Postcards from The Edge benefit at Metro Pictures. I've contributed to this fundraiser for several years and it's always great to hear that the piece has sold.

February 2017

January went by so quickly I forgot to post any updates. At the end of the month I once again contributed a postcard to the annual 'Postcards on the Edge' Visual Aids benefit in New York. This time the event was held at Metro Pictures.

Four of my photographs were included in Halo Lit, a print publication for women's fiction, featuring international writers. The editor had approached me last year about contributing some images and she chose four (two of which are shown above).

At the start of this month I had a meeting with a curator to show some of my work for a potential solo exhibition in 2018.

I've been continuing to build up images for a particular series, but have also been planning another project, quite different work. This wouldn't start until the end of March at the earliest because of time commitments, but am conducting research in the meantime. Look forward to being on location again.

December 2016

Last month my short article about Paris Photo was published in three photography blogs. Wobneb Magazine, edited by Cary Benbow in the USA, had the longer version and can be seen here. A slightly different version was published on photographer Elisabeth Blanchet's blog, The Accidental Photographer and a shorter look at Paris Photo was published on UK photography blog, Fleur and Arbor, run by Jasmine Farram and Olivia Newstead.

At the start of December, the SALON/16 exhibition opened at Photofusion in Brixton and I was pleased to have one of my Unseen Landscape photographs included in the show. I went to the opening which was incredibly busy and it was great to see all the work by other members of Photofusion. The show continues until 28 January 2017.

I also recently heard that some photographs that I shot over the summer will be featured in a print magazine. I really admire the publication and the photography they have featured so far, so am looking forward to seeing this issue next year.

Early in November, Plateform Magazine, an online photography publication from France edited by Laurence Guenoun, published their new issue which included 20 images from my Frame series - the first time a significant number of these have been published. I was happy to be featured - there was a lot of interesting work by international artists in this issue.

On 9 November I travelled to Paris to attend the Press View of Paris Photo at the Grand Palais. The viewing was from 5 - 9pm so I had time to see some other exhibitions before it started, including Todd Hido at La Galerie Particulière and Antoine Agata at Les Filles du Calvaire. It was the first time I had visited Paris Photo and I really enjoyed the experience.  It was a chance to discover some new galleries and find out about the artists that they represent. I am writing about it for a few blogs and will post links next month.

On 15 November, the London Independent Photography annual exhibition opened at Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch and it finishes on Sunday 20 November.  The show was selected this year by Max Houghton (Senior Lecturer in Photography at London College of Communication), Melanie King (curator and founder of London Alternative Photography Collective), and Michelle Sank (Senior Lecturer in Photography at Falmouth University).  I have a couple of Unseen Landscapes in this show, which are also included in the exhibition publication. The private view was busy with work by 48 photographers. Fleur and Arbor's Jasmine and Olivia came to the opening and wrote about it here.

I have also had news that work has been selected for a show opening in December so will write about that next month.

October 2016

At the end of September I found out that my two photographs had made the final selection for the RWA Open Exhibition in Bristol and I went to the opening in early October.  It was a busy event and it was good to catch up with three of the artists who were also  Academician candidates last year.

Shortly after, I was happy to find out that I had two photographs from the Unseen Landscape series selected for the London Independent Photography annual exhibition, which will take place during Photomonth at the Espacio Gallery, London. The show will run from 14 - 20 November.

Two other photographic series/studies came to an end in early October. One had been created over a period of 7 weeks while I was frequently visiting West Sussex, and the other - the Sea Level series, which began at the end of last year - also came to an end. I am going to spend the next few months reading and researching a new project to begin in early 2017.

September 2016

At the end of last month Iain Sargeant from Another Place magazine asked to publish some of my work from Unseen Landscapes and it came out in early September. You can see it here. I love Iain's photography and the work that he publishes so was very happy to be featured.

I am currently shortlisted for two exhibitions. The photographs I put forward are from different recent bodies of work - one which has never been shown before.

I have also just signed a contract with a French magazine who wish to publish some work and hopefully this will be within the next month or two. I'm excited about this because it will be the first time a selection of images from this series is published.

While my project is on hold, I have been continuing to photograph in Sussex and a couple of different themes have emerged. One is the sea level series which I have been adding to over the past month.

Summer Sale

Every year I have a summer sale to help with autumn production costs and this year I'm offering 3 different prints for sale at 8x10 inches each. Small editions and small prices! The photographs are: Beach (2016); Riverbed Stories #26 (2014); and Black river (2015). Each photograph is printed on Canson Baryta paper, signed and numbered, each in an edition of 10 and for sale at £50 + postage. Prints comes with certificate. August 2016

Last month some of my photographs from Unseen Landscapes made the longlist for the CHARLIE SMITH LONDON ANTHOLOGY 2016 prize. 40 of us were longlisted - it's always highly competitive (last year there were 900 submissions) - so I was happy to have got that far, particularly as photography was not widely represented.  The judges were Philly Adams (Senior Director, Saatchi Gallery), Zavier Ellis (Director, CHARLIE SMITH LONDON), Stephanie Grose (Collector), Andrew Salgado (Artist) and Heike Strelow (Director, Galerie Heike Strelow). The exhibition is currently on at the gallery - well worth seeing.

Since mid July I have been photographing in different locations for the start of a new series. I am not posting any of these images yet, but while I have been pursuing this project I have also been adding to work that started when I was shooting the Frame video at the end of 2015/early 2016. I've added some of these images to my website.

July 2016

Just a quick post to share some photos from my exhibition, River Stories Unseen Landscapes, at Gallery 7 - Pie Factory, Margate.

The show ran from 17 - 22 June and was a great experience. The Pie Factory is in the centre of the old town, so on the radar for local people and visitors. I was surprised by the number of people who saw the show and had some wonderful conversations with local artists and friends, Londoners visiting Margate for the day and visitors from Europe. A lot of creative people are drawn to the area, not just for the Turner Contemporary. There are plenty of artist studios and interesting projects - I hope to get down again later this month.

 

 

Travelling to Kent during the exhibition gave me time to develop some existing ideas. I have been planning a project for a while and this month will be able to shoot in different locations and see if the project can work. Time to move on!

Earlier this month I found out that my video, Riverbed Stories was shortlisted for the British Women's Art award 2016 alongside work from 12 other artists. The video, produced in 2015, was the conclusion to a project I had worked on for a couple of years and been very absorted by, so to have it acknowledged this way is really nice.

In June I'll be having a solo exhibition, River Stories, Unseen Landscapes, at Gallery 7 - Pie Factory, Margate. There will be colour work from the Riverbeds which has never been shown before, alongside some black and white photographs and video stills, and it will be the first time that images from the Unseen Landscapes series are exhibited. I'm looking forward to spending a week in Margate - seeing friends from the area, visiting exhibitions at the Turner and enjoying time by the sea.

At the end of this month I'll be in a group exhibition, Scenes from the City: Urban Photography, at the Riverside Gallery, Richmond. Twenty two photographers are in the show, which runs from 28 May - 16 July.

At the end of March #Photography Magazine's new issue was published and I have four images from the Frozen series featured. The quarterly online and print magazine is curated by Genea Bailey and Daisy Ware Jarret and features a large selection of interesting photographic work - the current issue can be seen here.

Work from the same series was featured on Fleur & Arbor's photography blog this month as Jasmine and Olivia invited me to write a guest post about the images. A larger selection from the series has also been featured on their platform.

At the end of March the spring issue of the London Independent Photography Magazine, fLIP, was published and I went along to the launch evening with some friends. Here's one of my photographs from the Frame series in the magazine.

I have been photographing a lot the last couple of months, trying out some new ideas. It's been great to be out on location again - will see if these develop into a new project.

Also heard that I have some work going into a group exhibition in London next month which I'm looking forward to - more to follow.

March 2016

  This month the focus is on publications. In early March I published a book with many of the Frame photographs and video images. I really enjoyed working on it - a preview of the book can be seen here.

Cary Benbow, a contributing writer to Lensculture and F-stop magazine and editor of Wobneb magazine on contemporary photography, recently published a feature on my Riverbed Stories and Unseen Landscapes work. It's really well-written and I'm delighted that he selected my photography for publication. The full article can be seen here.

Also very happy to have had Riverbed Stories featured as a photo essay on KALTBLUT Magazine, a magazine for Art, Fashion, Media, based out of Berlin.  They have a huge readership and it's a different audience for my work. It can be seen here.

Next week, the spring issue of the London Independent Photography Magazine, fLIP, is published and I have a couple of photographs featured from the Frame series, the first time this work has been published in a magazine. Looking forward to seeing it - it's always well produced and this issue's theme Lost/Found should be an interesting one.

At the end of December I was in West Sussex shooting more footage for the Frame video. I was able to collect a lot of material which I edited down into a short 3.33 piece. The video has been made to accompany an ongoing series of photographs at the same location. I wanted it to show a progression from figuration to abstraction and from a wide perspective towards a single frame. It's the most abstract work I've done in a while. It can be seen here.

This month Riverbed Stories video will be showing in Brighton, having been selected for Short Circuit's, 'Town and Country' curated experimental film screening.

Also at the end of the month, I shall once again be taking part in Visual Aid's benefit event, Postcards from the Edge, happening this year at Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York.  Last year's work sold, hoping the same will happen this year.

As we come to the end of 2015 I am putting together some ideas for a new video and a separate audio work which I hope to produce early next year. I have started to experiment and am excited by the thought of building up an exhibition around this work.

In mid December I took part in an open house print party with photographer friends Elisabeth Blanchet and Agnes Villette which was a great idea - a full day of interesting conversations, new friendships as well as print sales.

November 2015

Last month I heard that my short video, Riverbed Stories (2015), had qualified to compete at the 22nd International Independent Film Festival PUBLICYSTYKA 2015 in Poland which was exciting. The festival took place in Kędzierzyn – Koźle from 23 - 25 October.

I also found out that Riverbed Stories was going to be part of an exhibition and residency series at Fuse Art Space in Bradford.  '23:57' is programmed in response to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP21, 2015 and alongside the artists in residence there is environmental photography from Mark Adams, Sean Hovendick and John Wesley Mannion, interactive video work by Nina Yankowitz and Barry Holden and films by David Theobald and myself. '23:57' runs until 19 December.

 

In October the National Open Art exhibition opened at the Royal College of Art. The artists preview event was very busy and it was good to see all the work on display. There were 133 artworks from around 4,000 submitted; I was happy that my work, Before #1, had been selected. The exhibition ended Sunday 1 November.

October 2015

I was in Bristol on Saturday for the private view of the hugely popular Royal West of England Academy 163rd Open exhibition.  As usual there were a lot of people there to see the work and it was great to meet some of the other artists.  I'm exhibiting three photographs from Riverbed Stories as an Academician candidate having been shortlisted with nine other artists at the start of this year. I had been invited to submit following last year's exhibition. If you're near Bristol, the exhibition opens Sunday 4 October and runs until Sunday 29 November.
