Looking back on 2023 - a year of personal challenges and global heartache. Hard to consider 2023 in a positive light but nontheless I am very grateful for the art opportunities that came my way during the year, some of which are pictured above.
In 2024 I look forward to showing some of my Disrupted Landscapes work in London and producing a new zine, Chalk.
Hoping for a calmer year, more compassion, less cruelty, more peace in this world.

It’s been a good month for my new video, Vanishing. The film was screened at the CMR Project Space in Redruth as an Official Selection of the Cornwall Film Festival. It was programmed within their Experimental Film Weekender.
Vanishing has also made the Official Selection for the Festival CinemaZERO 2023 “Visions Beyond the Anthropocene” MUSE award competition which means that it will be screened with seven other shortlisted films in Trento, Italy on 3 December. Festival CinemaZERO has been running 16 years and I love how it is dedicated to films that have ‘a different attitude, adventurous or poetic, DIY or punk, anarchic or self-sufficient; that speak with a personal, intimate, courageous and autonomous voice’.
Finally, Vanishing has also been longlisted for the Zealous Amplify creative competition on the theme of Environment. There are 50 creative projects on this longlist - photography, video and different media. I look forward to finding out more about the projects during the competition.
When I finished the short video at the end of August my main emotion was relief! It had been a long and challenging project for me for different reasons but was completed with Juliet’s reading of the voiceover. I’m so pleased it has been given these opportunities.
Opening night of the London Group Open 2023 at Copeland Gallery
The London Group Open exhibition previewed on 9 November and there was a huge turn-out at Copeland Gallery. There were 158 artworks from member and selected non-member exhibitors and a strong selection of video and sculptural installations. My video, Chalk, was projected as part of a four-video loop and I really enjoyed the other videos in that selection, one of which received a prize. I invigilated one afternoon, which was a great opportunity to see the work when it was less busy - although there were people arriving throughout - and it was a chance to talk to other exhibitors and members of the London Group. The exhibition ran from 10 - 26 November.

London Group Open Exhibition
At the end of September I found out that my Chalk video had been selected for The London Group Open 2023 exhibition at Copeland Gallery. I had exhibited with the London Group before in their 2017 Open and enjoyed the experience. The fact this year’s exhibition is being held at the Copeland Gallery in Peckham is a bonus as it’s such a special place. I’m excited to see the works on display when it opens next month.
Leave to Remain: A Snapshot of Brexit
In mid-October at the London School of Economics, there was a talk and book launch for Leave to Remain: A Snapshot of Brexit, written by Noni Stacey and published by Lund Humphries. I went along and really enjoyed the evening and Noni’s conversation with LSE Professor Tony Travers. There were so many questions from the audience which showed how interested people are in the fall-out from Brexit and the ways in which artists have been responding to it. A few of the other contributors were present and it was lovely to finally meet in person.
Vanishing, 2023
October has been a good month for my new video, Vanishing. It is an Official Selection for the Cornwall Film Festival 2023 in the category, Experimental Film - Artist Moving Image and the festival takes place in November. I would love to be there as it sounds like a great festival. It’s been running 22 years and has Mike Leigh is its patron. Vanishing is also an Official Selection for the Cannes Continental Film Festival, which is an online festival.
Burned forest, British Columbia, Canada September 2023
From the end of August until 7 September, I was in western Canada for a family visit. It was four years since I had visited and usually the journey involves a long drive south from Alberta into British Columbia. Canada has been experiencing a record number of forest fires this year, and on the drive between provinces many newly devastated areas of burned forests lined the highway. 3 days ago the Canadian National Wildland Fire Report stated there were 229 uncontrolled fires, 95 fires being held and 163 fires under control.
Noni Stacey’s new book, Leave to Remain: A Snapshot of Brexit, was published by Lund Humphries on 7 September. It explores art and activism as well as insights into English society, national identity, migration, colonialism, racism, austerity, and the border in Northern Ireland and Scotland. So pleased to be a part of this timely publication. There is a launch at Photo Museum Ireland on 29 September and one at LSE, London on 19 October.

A quick post as two months have nearly gone past since the last one. It’s been extremely busy.
In July and August I was out on a couple of shoots to complete the short video and I’m happy to say that it is now completed. It’s the third consecutive video to have been filmed on the Kent coast - I always anticipated making three films there. I may put it online for a short while, I do hope to send it out to some festivals.
In July the Royal Photographic Society announced its shortlisted photographers for the International Photography Exhibition 165 and I was very happy to be included in the list. I have printed up three photographs from the Tangents series and sent them on to the RPS - the final exhibitors are announced in October.

In mid-August there was a get-together on Worthing seafront for the OPEN Eco display, a part of Brighton Photo Fringe. Some of the exhibitors met up with members of Photo Fringe to talk and be interviewed. It was a fun afternoon. The work - which was installed last October - will be in place until this October. The outdoor prints, produced by Metro Imaging, looked incredible after being infront of the sea for almost a year.
Some book related news as well this month. One of my photographs from Disrupted Landscapes has been used for the cover of a Norwegian poetry book ’Overgang til menneske’ by Gunstein Bakke. In English it means Transition to human - a great title.
And announcements have been made for the upcoming launch of Leave to Remain A Snapshot of Brexit - a book by Noni Stacey, published by Lund Humphries. The book explores the role of art, photography, activism and satire in disseminating the debates around Britain leaving the European Union... with striking illustrations by artists, photographers and activists including Cornelia Parker, Wolfgang Tillmans, David Shrigley, Tacita Dean and Jeremy Deller, Cold War Steve and Led By Donkeys. I’m delighted to be included in this important and timely book with some of my photographs and an interview.
Kent coast
May is Photo Month in London and it was great to spend time at Photo London and Peckham 24. There was some really impressive and inspiring work from artists I hadn’t previously known - Sam Burford at Fiumano Clase, and Kacper Kowalski at Atlas Gallery, (part of Photo London), and Jon Henry and Brea Souders at Peckham 24. There were performances and talks in Peckham as well, plus the whole week is very social.
And I have been back at the coast with visits to Kent and Sussex. I’m shooting video and stills but the main focus is really video. As well as my regular camera, I was working with a second one which is waterproof, but the sea was quite rough. I’ll try it again on a calmer day.

Finally, I was happy to hear that my short video, Chalk, was an Official Selection for the Lulea International Film Festival in Sweden. It’s a monthly selection, so it may go no further, but I’m still pleased it has got to this stage.
Hastings Rocks International Film Festival
Last month I was excited to find out that my short film, Chalk, had made the Official Selection for the Hastings Rocks International Film Festival, 14-15 April 2023.
I went down to the screening on Friday evening to see it included in a programme of short films that had a connection to Sussex (in Chalk, some of the footage is shot at Seven Sisters in East Sussex). It was wonderful to see such a packed venue for these early evening films and to see Chalk on such a big screen, with fantastic sound. There were some very strong films - a stop motion film called Salvation Has No Name by Joseph Wallace really stood out, and I enjoyed Just Add Water: Stories from the Sea by Kristian Coburn. I went down again on the Saturday and enjoyed more films, especially Ortolan - Bones and All by Director Tracy Mathewson and Writer Kate Winter. Additionally, the team running the festival - Dr James, Sara and Archie - were so welcoming, it was a lovely experience.
It has really been the month for film, as Chalk was also part of the Official Selection for the Fisheye Film Festival which took place in High Wycombe on 22 April 2023. I had never been there before, and was happy to visit and see Chalk screened as part of a lunchtime programme of films. All of the filmmakers were invited to speak and answer questions about their films which was very interesting. I particularly liked Order 27 which was written and directed by Thomas Wheeler, and Head Boy, which was written and directed by Lee Campbell. All the films were included in a printed brochure which was a lovely souvenir of the day.
Millennium Images catalogue 2023
This month I was very happy to be included in the newly published Millennium Images catalogue, entitled Universal Happiness, Peace and Prosperity. The image is one of a series that I shot up at Sizewell Nuclear Power Station - it was strange seeing so many people relaxing, reading and picnicking in this landscape.
Kent coast, April 2023
Early this month I managed to arrange one filming trip to the coast, where I visited a few different locations and then met up with a friend to see two exhibitions at the Turner Contemporary.
Later in the month I got some useful feedback on my script - which was timely. I’m still writing and refining, but am not giving myself pressure to complete anything by June. Hopefully, once my camera issues are sorted I can travel back to the coast and film.
I’m also working on Disrupted Landscapes and taking the work into a different graphic style. I haven’t printed any of these new images yet, and that has to be the next step, to see how they look off the screen.

February rushed by, but it was a really nice surprise to find out early in the month that I was shortlisted for AIS Women Behind The Lens: Place & Space for five photographs from my series Disrupted Landscapes. 20 women photographers were shortlisted from submissions across 52 countries by an international jury.

I had two days shooting on the coast during February which enabled me to make some progress on the video. I have also been fine-tuning the narration and making edits in Premiere - aiming for it to be completed by June.

In early March I found out that my short video, Chalk, made the official selection for the Fisheye Film Festival which takes place in High Wycombe in April. The festival has been running seven years and screens international films - I’m very happy that Chalk will be a part of the experimental film programme.
At the Photography Open at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol
I spent the day in Bristol seeing the Photography Open and Jem Southam exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol. The show, which was selected by Jem Southam, Amak Mahmoodian, Sian Bonnell, Susan Derges RWA and Judith Jones RWA, along with Tracy Marshall, Deputy Director at Centre for British Photography, features 150 artists. I’m happy to be showing new work there and the exhibition is on until 1 May, so plenty of time for people to visit.
Coastal shoot
January seems to have gone very quickly. I only travelled down to the coast once this month because of the very cold weather and having other commitments. I’m still adjusting my video script and storyboard but have started to lay visuals in Premiere. I’ll plan a block of time by the sea once the conditions are more favourable.
Disrupted Landscapes zine
I was happy to find out that I’d sold most of the Disrupted Landscapes zines I’d left at the Royal Photographic Society in Bristol. They had been part of our Photo Book Club Collective display in the foyer of the RPS last October. I have been invited to send more copies which is great news.
Disrupted Landscapes installed in the Photofusion SALON/22 exhibition
A quick post before the end of 2022. Photofusion’s annual SALON exhibition opened in early December and it was a lovely evening - lots of strong work, lots of familiar faces. I was very happy to have had a recent Disrupted Landscapes photograph selected for the show. The exhibition continues until 27 January, so there’s plenty of time to see it if you are in London.

In mid-December I was excited to find out that an image of mine had been selected for the Royal West of England Academy’s Open Photography exhibition. The show is dedicated to contemporary photography and work has to have been produced within the last three years. My Tangents and Offshoots piece that was selected was made in November 2022 - so very recent! Grateful to the six members of the selection panel for the opportunity to show at the RWA again, and looking forward to seeing the other selected work. The show opens to the public 28 January and runs until 1 May 2023.
The year comes to an end with a few different projects that hopefully will be resolved in 2023. For the past couple of months I’ve been writing another short video script and once that feels finished, I’ll begin shooting visual material. I am also expanding Disrupted Landscapes into mixed media and have one work finished, but have plans for a couple more pieces. And, the idea of a book for the series is still present. I have a couple of texts and many images and just need the time to get it to the next stage. Hopefully 2023 will be a year of progress and completion!

Brighton Photo Fringe opened on 6 October and I was pleased that I could be there for the opening night. The Collectives Hub exhibition at Phoenix Arts Space was dynamic and full of strong work. Our Collective 22 display, ‘rivers, signals, miracles’, had been installed by a few of our Collective with help from Photo Fringe and it looked wonderful. I was really happy to see my video Chalk playing as part of the installation. Just before the festival closed, we heard that our Collective 22 show had won the Danny Wilson Memorial Award for group/collective exhibition in the professional category, which was brilliant news!
OPEN Eco displayed on Worthing seafront as part of Photo Fringe.
OPEN Eco opened on Worthing seafront on 15 October and I was able to visit the following Tuesday and see it installed. I like how the installation is so accessible and in keeping with its surroundings. While I was there several people stopped to look at the photographs. There are 20 selected photographers in this display, which is part of Photo Fringe, and the installation will be in place for six months.
At BOP, Books on Photography Festival, Bristol. Our Photo Book Club Collective had a digital exhibition in the entrance of the Royal Photographic Society, as well as copies of our books and zines on display.
The Books on Photography Festival took place on the weekend of 8 and 9 October and it was great to be able to come to Bristol and take part with other members of the Photo Book Club Collective.
We had an impressive digital exhibition in the foyer of the Royal Photographic Society (photo shows my image, Disrupted Landscapes 7), and had copies of our books and zines on display. We were also located in the Martin Parr Foundation with a large book-stacked table. It was a lovely weekend with so many opportunities to talk about photography with artists, printers and publishers.
Back on the Kent coast
In mid October I went back to the Kent coast to shoot some photography and video. I was staying in Deal, so was able to spend the weekend experimenting with new equipment in very different weather conditions. I had hoped to go out on a boat, but the sea was too rough. However, I was able to try it at the end of the month in calmer conditions and it was an exhilarating experience.

There’s quite a bit to mention as the last blog post was in July. I’ll start with what’s coming up and then work backwards!
Recent news is that my photograph, Skeletal Forest, is one of twenty images selected for the Photo Fringe 2022 OPEN Eco exhibition to be installed in an outdoor exhibition on Worthing beach from 15 October. The exhibition will remain in place for six months. The selection panel for the Photo Fringe OPEN Eco was Steve Macleod director of Metro Imaging; Elizabeth Grieve from Land Art Agency and artist Emma Critchley. It’s lovely to have the opportunity to show work again in Worthing, where I spent my teenage years and where my parents lived, and where I was lucky enough to have a solo show, A Strange and Familiar Sea, at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery in early 2020.

I’m also taking part in Photo Fringe with Collective 22, a group of photographers that has formed out of the East Meets West Masterclass earlier this year and had a group show in Derby. Our exhibition will be at the Phoenix Art Space along with other Collectives - it’s a huge space! I’m hoping to show my video, Chalk. The opening night for Photo Fringe is 6 October, and it runs until the end of the month. Collective 22 has also been longlisted for Format 2023.
On the weekend of 8/9 October I’ll be joining other members of the Photobook Club Collective at BOP, the annual Books on Photography festival in Bristol. I really enjoyed visiting last year, so it’s great to be taking part this time. I’ll have copies of my zine, Disrupted Landscapes, with me. Our Collective also has a digital exhibition which will be in the foyer of the Royal Photographic Society.
My Disrupted Landscapes zine will also be on display at Serchia Gallery, Bristol on 7 October for READ THE ROOM II, a celebration of self-published books and the artists who create them.
Emergentes 2022
In early August I found out that my Disrupted Landscapes series had been shortlisted for the Emergentes 2022 International Photography Award. It’s an award that is run by a non-profit Cultural Association that organizes Encontros da Imagem – International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts in the city of Braga, Portugal. All the shortlisted artists had four portfolio reviews of their choice in late September, and I really enjoyed showing my work to the 4 reviewers that I met online.

Finally, I have not been able to go back to the coast since late July, however I will be there again this month, trying something new and with a new camera. I am thinking about a new video, and have been researching content - I need a good block of undisturbed writing time as well!
The image above is one of several recent images which have handdrawn black interventions in the landscape. I’m testing this idea out in a couple of different ways and hope to have something to share soon!
After a gap of three years it was lovely to be able to return to Arles in early July for Rencontres d’Arles. There were many exhibits that I really enjoyed - particularly A Feminist Avant Garde, work by Frida Orupabo, and Arthur Jafa, all at LUMA, Noémie Goudal’s installation at Église des Trinitaires, displays by Klavdij Sluban, Julien Lombardi and Mahmoud Khattab at Croisière, and the wonderful Songs of the Sky exhibition at Monoprix.
Arles, France
The rest of the month has rushed by. I’ve been preparing the groundwork for a couple of projects, and this is likely to continue for a few more months. Towards the end of July, I was happy to finally get back to the south coast for a photography and walking day.

Chalk video captures
Happy to share the news that my film, Chalk, won the Best Experimental Short award at Ramsgate International Film and TV festival earlier this month. It was in competition with 14 films from Canada, Brazil, Iran, Germany, Serbia, Hungary, China, Poland, the US and UK. I didn’t manage to see the short experimental films myself which was a shame but I was there on the final day and caught some great documentary short films, as well as the closing film and the awards ceremony. Congratulations to Sylvie Bolioli, Maria, and everyone else for making it such a friendly, filmmaker’s festival. I met some lovely people and it was a great experience with a surprisingly wonderful outcome! Click here for the full list of awards.
Rhodes, Greece
June also saw my first journey overseas since January 2019. It was wonderful to spend a whole week in Lindos, Rhodes, and to be able to travel around the island as well. I’d never been there before but it was incredibly beautiful. Later in June I caught my first Covid-19 infection and was in isolation for 10 days until testing negative. Good to be finally out in the world again.
While I was recovering from Covid, I was able to work on Disrupted Landscapes, and also give some thought to a new body of work. This is an idea that was in the mix during my MA, but would be approached slightly differently now. I am still very interested in working with the chalk coastal landscape, and this would be one way to extend the project. I hope to get back to the coast in July.
Lutyens room at Bell House, Dulwich
The year is whipping past and it’s mid-May already. I am currently taking part in a small group exhibition of 8 women photographers at Bell House in Dulwich. 5 curators have taken over different rooms in this large Georgian house inviting artists to respond to the theme Ways of Seeing Green after John Bergen’s famous series.
Artist Ky Lewis curated the ground floor Lutyens room where I’m showing a large photograph from Riverbed Stories. The show is open again on the weekend of 21 and 22 May.
Next month I will be part of the Ramsgate International Film and TV Festival. I’m looking forward to visiting, seeing some of the films and meeting other filmmakers. My Chalk video is part of the Experimental Short Film programme scheduled for Thursday 9 June.
And finally I graduated! I was at the formal graduation ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in early May with other MA and BA students. Our MA Photography graduation had been postponed from last year because of COVID. This photo was taken at the completion of the ceremony.

It’s been two months since the last blog post. During that time the East Meets West Masterclass programme came to an end, and our group exhibition, 22, took place over the weekend of March 17 - 19, as part of Format Festival’s Format 22 Presents. Many of the 22 participants came to Derby to set up the show and finally meet one another. It was a really lovely time: an intense collaborative installation and a well-attended private view, followed by an event at Quad, and catching up over food and drinks.

In February I had a great day on the south coast shooting images to use in my Disrupted Landscapes series before heading to the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne. For the past few months my focus has been on making a small publication of this project, and I’ve been following two different ideas. There have been many tests, but I feel like I’m gradually getting closer to a version that works.

Finally, I was extremely happy to have my short video, Chalk, accepted for the Ramsgate International Film and TV Festival this June. As much of the video was shot on the Kent coast, it feels really good to have the opportunity to screen it in the area.

January has rushed by. I’ve been spending time editing Disrupted Landscapes with the intention of making a small book/zine. A few Dummies have already been made, but there’s still lots of decisions to make. I’m hoping that the final East Meets West Masterclass in mid-February will be helpful.
Installation of work at Photofusion
The Photofusion SELECT/21 show was up until 21 January. On 19 January there was an online artists talk with Katy Barron, who had curated the installation of SELECT. The format of short artist presentations with questions and answers worked really well, and it was interesting to hear the other artists speak about their work.

In late January I had a few days in Derbyshire to coincide with a meeting at Derby Quad with the other participants in the East Meets West Masterclass. It was great to be able to see some of the beautiful countryside, to visit Stanage Edge, Eyam Village, Bakewell and Padley Gorge. I wish I could have had more days to explore and take photographs. The meeting went well, and there was a sense we had made good progress during the day. It also coincided with a new exhibition at Quad, where my friend Sarah-Jane Field was exhibiting and that was a real bonus.
Finally, it was nice to hear that my video, Chalk, had made the Official Selection in the Monthly Film Festival.
Chalk video at Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre
In mid-December I went up to Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre for the day. It was so good to get out of London for a short while and explore somewhere new. Bury is on the tram route from Manchester and easily accessible. I had enough time to see all the 10 shortlisted videos for the Next Thing Moving Image Award and the exhibition by Yuen Fong Ling. Thinking it might be the only time to see my video Chalk projected at a large size I had wanted to go there, and I really enjoyed all the other videos, with personal favourites Useless Machines by Kialy Tihngang, Search to Belong by Svetlana Ochkovskaya and As long as there is bone there is language by Arit Emmanuela Etukudo.

Also in mid-December I was very surprised and extremely happy to hear that my Disrupted Landscapes work had been shortlisted for the AIS Open 2022 Women Behind the Lens. There was a fantastic jury for this exhibition and applicants from over 20 countries. 22 photographers have made the shortlist and it’s been great to read about their different projects. Also in December, SELECT/21 opened at Photofusion. This members’ award show, with artists from 2020 and 2021, features Maria Ahmed, Tamsin Green, Hayleigh Longman, Steve Pill, Mathushaa Sagthidas, Jannine Smith and myself. It was a lovely opening event catching up with friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. I've 2 works on acrylic in the show that relate to an earlier series, Sea Level + a short video, Frame. The show runs until 21 January.

November has been a busy and enjoyable month. I was very happy to hear that my new video, Chalk, had been chosen as one of 10 films to be shown as part of The Next Thing Award 2021, at Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre, and had made it into the top three. This was a lovely surprise as I never know what reception my videos will get. I really enjoyed working on Chalk though, and hope it may get some additional outings. Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre has a dedicated moving image gallery and has a great history of showing innovative, conceptual work at the museum. I definitely want to go up and see it, the show will run until late January 2022.
At LCC’s MA Photography graduation show
It was a great honour to be asked by Professor Val Williams to be a co-judge of the LCC MA Photography’s Sproxton Award 2021, alongside curator Anne Braybon, and fellow cohort Natalie Robinson. This year there was a physical installation of work externally curated by Vivienne Gamble, and a Virtual Showcase in the floorplan of the Turner Contemporary, curated by Val Williams and Charlotte Reeves. We looked at the work online and then walked around the different gallery areas. There was so much strong work that many projects were considered for the prize. We eventually agreed on our final selection of three projects, with Anne announcing the prize-winner and Natalie and I announcing the two highly commended works.
I’ve continued to add to the Disrupted Landscapes photographic series this month, and this is a recent one. I have some ideas of how a book of this work could look and have a rough outline, but I need to dedicate time to developing these book ideas further. A small publication was definitely one of my desired outcomes from the East Meets West Masterclass programme and this comes to an end in March 2022. There have been many online meetings among the group this past month as we discuss a collective project.
Birling Gap
October seems to have gone really quickly. I decided to have some days out by the sea and on one trip visited the Port Hotel in Eastbourne, where my video Frame has been playing, and then went onto Seaford, stopping off for walks at Beachy Head and Birling Gap. Another day I visited Margate to see the Turner Contemporary Open exhibition and meet with a friend. A third trip was to Bristol to visit the Books on Photography Festival as I knew many photographers would be there that weekend. It was also an opportunity to see Stephen Gill’s excellent exhibition at the Arnolfini.

Earlier this month I finished my video, Chalk. I had begun the project in May and had been shooting material on the south coast on and off throughout the summer and autumn. The video is about chalk from landscape to language, how it’s used to communicate ideas, is tied to myth, English tradition, history and ideas of English national identity. At the moment the video is password protected so if you’d like to view it, just drop me a message.
I haven’t had the opportunity to spend much time on Disrupted Landscapes this month, but will be picking it up again in November. This is one of the recent images.
In addition to the East Meets West Masterclass - which had a great session with Revolv this month - I was also one of three photographers invited to select the annual London Independent Photography exhibition.
