May 2014

I have an interview published in the May edition of an Italian-based online magazine called LandEscape Art Review. The publication features innovative contemporary art that references landscape. The editorial team sent an interesting set of questions after selecting nine of my images for publication from an open submission process. Happy that I managed to reference William Burroughs! Take a look if you have some time - there are eight artists featured - I particularly like Thomas Ladd's photography and work by Gürkan Mıhçı.

I was happy to find out that this photograph from Riverbed Stories is the centrefold image of the new London Independent Photography Magazine. The magazine comes out three times a year and is available through the Photographers Gallery, Serpentine, Whitechapel, Photofusion and National Portrait Gallery. I've been working on this series since late December, (although documenting this area since 2009), and  shooting at this location a couple of times a month.

I am also anticipating inclusion in two publications later in April - one of which includes a feature and interview. Both are non-UK publications. I'll include links to them once they're available.

Over the past month I've been collecting content for the video project and also building up a few different photographic series. I'm aiming for at least 12-15 strong images for each project from which to start printing.

Inside video was recently selected for the inaugural Sidney Cooper Film Open at the Sidney Cooper Gallery, Christchurch University, Canterbury. The Film Open, curated by Hazel Stone, ran from 20 - 22 February and featured 13 short films. I was able to visit and see all of them and was really happy with the technical quality of the screening and the other films on the programme, which included works by Patricia Wilson Smith, Stacey Guthrie and Anna MacDonald.

This month my Dream House video gets to travel to Dunedin, New Zealand, where it has been selected to be screened as part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival. Initiated in 2000, the Dunedin Fringe  aims to bring experimental contemporary art to a wider audience and to support the work of emerging audiences. Dunedin is apparently the furthest city in the world from London so it's exciting to think of the video being seen there.

I've also begun the early stages of a new audio visual work. It's a subject close to my heart and has been on the back burner for months. I'm unsure at this time how the finished work will be presented but I'm beginning to collect the material I need and will let it find its form during the editing process.

Since the New Year I've been busy shooting across several different series of work and building up portfolios of new images. Some of these I'll definitely develop further. I've had an idea for a video for some time and can see some of these photographs complementing this project.

In late January I once again took part in the annual fundraiser, Postcards from the Edge, to raise money for Visual Aids. The group exhibition was held at Luhring Augustine, New York. Lots of artists took part and it looked like the show was really well attended.

Another benefit exhibition takes place in early February. This time it's a biennial fundraiser for Studio 1.1., a non-profit artist-run gallery in East London which I've known for several years and want to support. At the last count around 90 artists were contributing work so the preview night is going to be very busy!

Still from Inside (c) Mandy Williams 2010

Earlier this month my video Inside was screened at the 8th International Streaming Festival of Audio-Visual Art in their Documenta Programme. The festival, which is organised out of The Hague in the Netherlands, ran from 1 - 15 December.  It featured independent artists exhibiting unconventional audiovisual art from all over the world and I was happy to have had my work selected.

2013 has been a really good year - from having a one-person show in London in March, to being part of the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, and having video and audio work selected and screened in Athens, Cairo, Washington, Moscow, Lisbon,The Hague, and in the UK.

Looking forward to 2014 and working on new projects.

Still from Dream House (c) Mandy Williams 2013

At the beginning of August I found out that my video Dream House had been selected for the Cairo Video Festival, which takes place from the 25 September to 7 October. The Cairo Video Festival, curated by Mohamed Allam and Dia Hamed, presents a diverse program of experimental film and video art from around the world. Dream House screens on Saturday 5 October in a programme that includes videos made by artists from Canada, Austria, Australia, Scotland and the USA.

Earlier in the month I produced a short audio piece, 20 minute journey, for an open call called Intermission: Audio portraits of place - Mapping the space between A and B. The work was selected by Jennie Savage and Nuno Torres from the Echoes project in Lisbon to be broadcast on Portugese Radio on 21 and 22 September in the 'Convergence' programme of the event.

Still from Inside (c) Mandy Williams 2010

Very excited to have had my video, Inside, selected for the Washington Project of the Arts Experimental Media Screening 2013 at The Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design, Washington on 23 September. The event is one of two screenings organised by the WPA - the other being at the Phillips Collection - that feature works which explore and examine privacy and surveillance in contemporary society. Jason Eppink, Associate Curator of Digital Media at Museum of the Moving Image in New York City, has selected the program.

Also in the USA, I'm contributing a small photograph on aluminium, House #5, for a benefit in Detroit later this month. The benefit, organised by Museum of New Art's Director Jef Bourgeau, will raise money for MoNA and includes work by 75 artists, including Pae White, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Uta Barth and Iain Baxter.

Over the past couple of months I've begun to collect ideas for a new video project which I hope to begin shooting in October.

July 2013

In June my video, Inside, was screened at Firstsite in Colchester for the Playing with Space Artist Film Screening curated by Lawrence Bradby as part of RIBA’s Love Architecture Festival 2013. The invitation came as a result of being a member of Axis. I didn't get to attend the event but the programme looked very interesting with films by Alex Pearl, Ruairi Watson and Claire Hope amongst others.

In early July I found out that one of my photographs, Before #7, had been selected for the Hot-One-Hundred exhibition at Schwartz Gallery in Hackney Wick. The show features 100 artists and the work was chosen by Ismail Erbil and Patrick Michalopoulos, the artist-curators of Schwartz Gallery. The exhibition opens on 17 July and I'm excited to see how the show will look installed in the gallery.

House #3 (c) Mandy Williams + displayed in the RA Summer Exhibition

As an exhibitor in this year's Royal Academy's Summer exhibition I've had the opportunity to view the show a couple of times in the past week. The highlights for me have been the Photography room, room VIII (showing work that includes Chuck Close and Rodney Graham), and the room dedicated to Grayson Perry's new tapestries.  On my second visit many of the individual works I had liked on Varnishing Day had already sold and the room showing editioned prints had sold particularly well. There are 4 private views before the show opens to the public on 10 June which is a great opportunity to take friends around for free and look at the exhibition in more detail.

From Dream House, 2013 From 'Dream House' (c) Mandy Williams 2013

A lot of different things have been happening in May. My video, Inside, (2010) was screened at the inaugural Art Lacuna Film Festival in London and then earlier this week I was very happy to find out that Dream House (2013) had been selected for the Athens Video Art Festival in the category 'video art'.  The festival, which has been running since 2005 and always looks really interesting, takes place in June - I'll write more about this next month.

I've also had a photograph accepted into the Royal Academy Summer exhibition. This is the first time despite being short-listed twice before, so very pleased to make it through. The show opens on 10 June, but there's a few private views before then, so will write an update once I've seen the exhibition.

Waiting for You #3, 2013 (c) Mandy Williams

Waiting for You, finished at House Gallery on 19 March.  It was a really enjoyable experience and a great incentive to develop new work - many of the photographs were from 2012/13. The video, Dream House, which was created for the exhibition, can be seen here.  The exhibition was reviewed as 'stunning and haunting'.  You can read the review by clicking the link.

My video, Inside, which was also on display at House Gallery, is going to be shown in Moscow this week as part of a curated video, photography and performance exhibition, Discovering Borderlands.  The Moscow Art Project artist-curators have organised several exhibitions and I'm pleased to have been selected for this one, along with 18 other international artists.

March 2013

Waiting for You opened at House Gallery, London on 6 March and runs until Tuesday 19 March. It features photography and video from 2009-13 and explores home as a place of aspiration and desire in the 21st century. The exhibition includes a new video, Dream House, which interweaves fantasy and reality as children visualise their ideal adult home and a new mixed media piece, Setting, where a collection of seemingly idyllic homes mark scenes of financially motivated domestic crimes.

The exhibition was previewed in Living South (pictured) and London Calling.

I especially like this comment that was left anonymously in the gallery book

Before #1, 2012 and still from Dream House, digital video, 2013

In early March I’ll be opening a solo exhibition of photography and video in London. Waiting for you will be at House Gallery from 6 - 19 March. It features work from 2009 – 2013 and explores home as a place of aspiration and desire in the 21st century. If you’re in London at that time I hope you will come and see it.

At the end of January I took part in Postcards from the Edge, the annual benefit organised by Visual Aids. This year it happened at the Sikkema Gallery, New York.  I also contributed work to Drugstore Beetle (Sitodrepa Paniceum) II, a David Horvitz project, at California State University, Long Beach Special Collections Library - Jan 28 - April 14 2013.

Unseen Landscape #1 (c) Mandy Williams 2012

In the autumn I took part in Photomonth once again, and this year it included being part of a special screening at Rich Mix in November as part of Photomonth’s Radical London. Riverbed Stories, the series of work that was shown, was produced especially for Photomonth.

I was pleased to have two photographs included in fLIP magazine's 'Routes' issue, which came out in mid November.  The images were from the Unseen Landscapes series and it was the first time they had been published. Work has also found its way into various tumblrs. One called not shaking the grass at http://likeafieldmouse.tumblr.com/archive featured Lost Voices, which was then re-blogged on many other sites.

The last couple of months I've been busy editing the video I started shooting in August. It will be included in an exhibition that I'll be having in London next Spring. More details to follow.

September 2012

Since July I've had three photographs included in From the Shadows, a curated group exhibition at Stour Space, Hackney Wick, a wonderful venue close to the Olympics site. The exhibition runs through to the end of September. RePlace #2 (c) Mandy Williams

At the end of this month my video, Inside, will be included in the inaugural exhibition at Porthole Space in Deptford. It's a new apartment exhibition venue run by artist/curator/tenant Sarah Jacobs. 17 artists are involved with the first show, Precious.

During October and November I'll once again be contributing to Photomonth. The work is from a new series called Riverbed Stories that was shot around Erith in South East London. The images will be screened at Rich Mix in November as part of Photomonth's Radical London.

I'm also working on a new video that I plan to show next Spring. This is exciting for me as it's the first major video project since completing Inside.

Lastly, a reminder about my new Photography page, which is regularly updated with images and news about exhibitions. I hope you will take a look and please ‘like’ if you want to be kept informed about shows and other events.

A quick update to post information about my new Photography page. This will be regularly updated with images and news about exhibitions and print sales. I hope you will take a look and please 'like' if you want to be kept informed about shows and other events.

May 2012

Have spent the last couple of months shooting and editing a lot of new material. There are several photography and video projects in production and I hope I'll have an opportunity to show some of them later in the year. It's been great having the extra time to experiment with ideas and develop new themes - and interesting to see how these new themes have become catalysts for some very different projects.

Some of my photographs from the Before series, 2012, were recently featured on Landscape Stories.  I really like this photography site that is based in Italy. They are generous with their exposure of photographers and the selected work is frequently different and evocative.

Still from Inside by Mandy Williams

I was really pleased that my short film, Inside, was recently selected for the Gaze film season opening programme at Artists' Television Access, San Francisco.  ATA is an artist-run, non-profit organization that cultivates and promotes culturally-aware, underground media and film and its Gaze film series is dedicated to screening independent film and video made by women. The seven selected films for the opening programme all address the subject of 'home' from 'the experimental unearthing and reassembly of family history to the voyeuristic gaze into the bedroom windows of strangers to the dreamlike Turkish beach resorts that offer a "home away from home".  It's a diverse and interesting examination of home - if you're in San Francisco it takes place on 17 May.

Before (C) Mandy Williams 2012

At the beginning of January I took part in a large benefit for Visual Aids in New York. Called Postcards from the Edge, it's an annual event which attracts a lot of artists and buyers. It took place at Cheim & Read this year, and raised over $82,200 making it the most successful Postcards benefit ever.  I was delighted that my contribution, Totem, was sold and only wish I could have been there myself to have seen the work, which included images from William Wegman, Yoko Ono and John Baldessari.

One of my aims for this year is to focus on creating new work. I've been shooting with a specific theme in mind, though this will develop more fully over the next few months. As a side project I documented a local housing estate at the start of the year, photographing the windows of the abandoned flats as the site awaits demolition.  I've initially set some of those images to a soundtrack and uploaded it to vimeo, but will revisit the idea later as the main project advances.

Immerse 2011 (c) Mandy Williams

A quick post before the year slips away. 2011 has been memorable and I feel lucky to have been involved with some excellent exhibitions this year at MASS MoCA, RWA, Bristol, and at Raven Row and Bearspace Gallery in London. The Bearspace show, Print & Design Now! has just finished this weekend.  I went to the private view in Deptford back in November and there was a lot of interesting work on display.

Over the last couple of months I have been trying to see more exhibitions in London. There have been some inspiring shows and I have come away with a desire to spend 2012 creating a lot of new work. Ideas have been building up throughout the year and it’s time to explore where they might lead. I’ve been experimenting with sound, video, photography and text.

For this year’s Photomonth, I re-visited the place where I had grown up, photographing the landscape in a visceral way to evoke emotion and memory. As part of the project, I wanted to add a short video. Finally complete, it’s now on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/artphotofilm/immerse
